How to Replace a Fan Motor

Step-by-step guide for replacing a fan/blower motor in an evaporative air cooler.

Medium

Before you start: Disconnect power completely. Verify the replacement motor matches your existing unit’s voltage, power, RPM, and mounting type (B3/B5/B14). Have the capacitor value ready if applicable.

Symptoms of a Failing Motor

  • Motor doesn’t start or hums without turning
  • Overheating or burning smell
  • Excessive noise or vibration
  • Fan speed is inconsistent or too slow
  • Motor trips circuit breaker

Step-by-Step Replacement

1. Access the Motor

Remove the service panel or rear cover. The motor is typically mounted on a bracket behind the fan blade assembly.

2. Disconnect Wiring

Take a photo of the wiring connections before disconnecting. Label wires if needed. Disconnect the power leads and capacitor wires from the motor terminals.

3. Remove Fan Blade and Old Motor

Loosen the set screw on the fan hub and slide the blade off the motor shaft. Unbolt the motor from its mounting bracket. Note the mounting type (foot mount / flange mount).

4. Install the New Motor

Mount the new motor using the same bolt pattern. Slide the fan blade onto the shaft and tighten the set screw. Reconnect wiring exactly as before — match wire colors and terminal positions.

5. Test

Restore power and test at all speed settings. Listen for unusual noise. Check that the fan rotates freely without rubbing. Verify proper airflow direction.
